YCB's "Town Band" ensemble, performing as part of a larger program on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War 7:30 p.m. Free.

The Bruce T. Halle Library will help Eastern Michigan University mark the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial (1809-2009) by hosting the traveling exhibition "Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War". Only twenty-five libraries nationwide will be hosting the exhibition and Eastern Michigan University has the distinction of being the first to receive it. The exhibition originated at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. As part of this exhibit, YCB's Town Band will perform a program of Civil War music.

Music "From Grief to Rejoicing," with two special features. In memory of (and dedicated to) Lorne Kennedy, charter and 30-season member of YCB, Alan Singer will perform his original alto saxophone solo with band. Later in the program, UM performance major Andrew Koeppe will perform a movement of the von Weber Second Clarinet Concerto. Announcement of the Band's Harold Goodsman Award will be made at this time.

YCB continues a quarter-century tradition of a joint, joyous holiday concert shared with the Ypsilanti Community Choir. The Band's section of the program will open with Gigout's glorious "Grand Chorus and Dialogue" for pipe organ and band, with assistant conductor Dr. James Wagner at the console of the Pease organ. The program will also include Reed's "Russian Christmas Music," fun music for the season, and the Band and the Choir joining forces for a grand finale!

In addition to a program of music never performed before by the YCB, the concert will feature guest professional euphonium soloist Adam Frey of Atlanta, GA, one of the great contemporary artists on that instrument. In addition, YCB will continue its tradition of having a student guest conductor from the Department of Music and Dance at Eastern Michigan University.

Join lovers of chamber music for an afternoon of small ensembles performed by Band members and our friends -- everything from classical to jazz, and even an appearance by YCB's vintage "Town Band" ensemble -- using some old fashioned instruments to play music from the 1880-1920 period. 

April 27, 2010 7:30 p.m. Free.  Auditorium, Whitmore Lake High School.  Joint concert with Whitmore Lake High School Band, Mike Kirby, conductor.  Each band will play a short concert, concluding with both bands combined for great music!

May 2, 2010  2:00 p.m.  Free.  Novi Civic Center.  Joint concert with Novi Concert Band.  Each band will play a short concert, concluding with both bands combined for great music!

May 22, 2010  9:00 a.m.  Free.  EMU Convocation Center.  An ensemble from the Band will provide the music for the Washtenaw Community College Commencement Ceremony--a short pre-event concert, ceremonial music for the event, and post-event music.

Washtenaw Community College, Guest conductor Dr. Max Plank, long-time Director of Bands at Eastern Michigan University, will lead the Band in the "Suite of Old American Dances." The first-ever performance of the "Warsaw Concerto" for piano with band accompaniment will be presented, with Dr. James Wagner of the EMU keyboard faculty as piano soloist. Local artist and assistant conductor Pat Padilla (Lady Sunshine and the X Band) will give the world premier of his "Tumbao" composition for band and tenor saxophone. Other features of the program will include the complete "William Tell" overture and selections from the hit movie and musical "Mary Poppins."



2010 Outdoor Series

For the fourth consective year, the YCB's Pep Band (aka "The Balboas") under the leadership of assistant conductor Pat Padilla, again performs spirited music, including the always-popular "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky, for the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run.

Bring your own chair and, if you like, a picnic basket. Hear "The Many Forms of 'March'"--marches from the movies, musicals, opera, symphonic music, celebration music, a funeral march, and, of course, favorite field marches ending with "Stars and Stripes Forever." Nathan Magyar, one of the world's outstanding male twirlers and featured twirler with the UM Marching Band, will perform.

Beginning with the 33rd season, players from the Ypsilanti Community Band and from Washtenaw Community College will perform together as the "Washtenaw Community Concert Band." The resulting band has two concert seasons: an indoor season and an outdoor season.

Special features of the program will include bassoon soloist Christian Green, a UM student, who will perform the "Hungarian Rondo" for bassoon by von Weber. Renowned area musician William R. Hayes, long-time orchestra/string teacher in the Ypsilanti schools, will conduct his own composition "Fanfare and March." Other features will include the Shostakovich "Festive Overture," the finale to "Pictures at an Exhibition," the brass choir fanfare "Stadt Wien," great show music from "Jersey Boys," and, of course, a Sousa march.

Annual joint concert with the Ypsilanti Community Choir. Following the Choir's portion of the program, the Band will perform the Widor "Toccata," for organ and band, with Dr. James Wagner at the Pease organ console. Among other festive holiday pieces, the Band will perform Anderson's "Christmas Festival." The program will close with the two groups combined, conducted by YCC conductor Ariel Toews-Ricotta, concluding with the "Hallelujah" chorus.

With a theme of "Women in Music," the program will feature music by women composers, such as Julie Giroux' "Italian Rhapsody," a woman guest conductor (Dr. Amy Knopps, Associate Conductor of Bands at Eastern Michigan University), a nationally prominent woman soloist (Nan Raphael, from Washington D.C., on piccolo), and an ensemble consisting solely of the women musicians in the Washtenaw Community Concert Band.

This concert will conclude Jerry Robbins' 13 years of service as conductor of the Ypsilanti Community Band and, through its partnerships with area higher education institutions, the Barnhill Band (EMU) and the Washtenaw Community Concert Band (WCC). The program will consist of his favorites from among performances of the 13 seasons--such pieces as "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral," "Les Miserables," "Lustpeil" overture, "Poet and Peasant Overture," Sousa's "Free Lance" march, and others.

2011 Outdoor Series

Dates and places for the 2011 Outdoor Series have not yet been determined. Musical selections will be made by Jerry Robbins' successor.
